Utah has a Brand New Club!!
The Central Utah Houndsmen Association!!

The club has been set up to provide opportunites for houndsmen across the state of Utah a chance to get together and have a good time.

I originally started the Utah Federation of Houndsmen and it has went a complete different direction than what it was originally intended to go.

This club will be set up around UKC licensed events and good times.

We will have a Bi-monthly news letter that will actually be sent out and the dues that are paid to the club for yearly memberships will be used for that purpose. It has been proposed that a Bi-monthly new letter along with post cards and reminders on all club events around the state not just the central utah club but the northern club and others would cost about $10 a person/family a year.

Club Events and Fees for those events

The club does not have any outside agendas that we feel need to be paid for. IF the club wants to donate money to a certain cause we will have a fund raiser for that one cause and all of the proceeds from that event will go for that purpose.
All Major Events held will be UKC licensed events. The cost of these events will be set depending on what the club decides it wants as far as trophies. If we just have the events and a good time and nobody needs another trophy for the wall then the proposed cost for the event would be $5 a dog and the majority of that $5 would go to UKC depending on how many dogs showed up. If trophies are to be handed out then that cost would be added to the cost of the event and it has been proposed that if we have an average of 30+ dogs in an event if we add an additional $2.50 to each dog it would pay for the cost of a 1st place trohpy for line and tree in the field trials, as well as the water races, a best of show, champion of champions and a grand champion. So far nobody feels that we need trophies for class breed or second place.

Open Events

At this time it has been proposed that the club not hold actual "Quote un-Quote" Open Events. All members with un-registered dogs that would like to come out and help during UKC field trials are encoraged to so.
After the UKC Field trials are held we will basically have an open event/ training time for all who want to join in. We will always have a minnimum of 2 courses and the ability to set up more. We will organize the heats in these events/training runs so that not only can we have guys who would like to race thier dog against one another sign up for the same heat. If we have a groupe of guys that want to pay thier money and then put together some heats and races of there own and race winners against winners hey great more power to them for the money they spent the club will supply the scent the course and help run the drags and they can go race till thier dogs can't run any more. We can put heats together where we have some younger dogs in the same heat with the older ones to give them a chance to learn. Time and time again we have puppy classes that never even leave the starting line. If they had an older dog in that heat that was worked up and wanted to go alot of them would follow along and gain some experience. We can set up shorter corses for pups that are just learning and longer ones for older dogs. All of this can be decided as time goes on and we get a better feel for what everyone wants.
The cost for this will be $5 a dog and it has been discussed and the idea brought forward that we can spend all day training dogs after the events. We can have treeing contests open drags short and long. A couple of the members have stated that they have horses that would be available to run lion and bear drags of up to a couple of miles in the afternoon's and evenings. We could run 5 or 6 of these easily in a day. I feel that the we can have alot better time if we take some of the competition out of the open events and just have fun as houndsmen.

Other Club Events and Items of Interest

We will have a club hunt once a month from March- November. This hunt will not be UKC sanctioned it will have no real time time limits as per say but we will try and keep them to 2 hours of hunting time. The purposes of these hunts will be to give guys just getting started into competition hunting or hunting with hounds period a chance to come out and learn the rules, and work with thier dog in a low tension situation where we can all have a great time. It will give guys who are just getting thier dogs going well a chance to introduce the dog to dogs outside of the kennel and gives us all a chance to make new friends and have a good time. The nest purpose of these hunts are to go out and hunt new areas so that when we have larger state hunts and regional events we multiple areas that have been personally hunted by the club members to send casts to. Every person in the club has a place that they go hunt and should be willing to guide there providing it is safe for the dogs and they have permission.

A couple of the other things that have been brought up

At each one of these monthly night hunts have some type of a seminar. This would be something with topics like maybe overall confimation of a dog or how to sow a dog. We could take the time one month at a time and go over the breed standards of one or two of the breeds show the differences in what a judge is looking for in each breed and why.
The next month we can have an events seminar that goes over the rules and regulations of a UKC event, how the event should be laid out and what has to be done for an event to meet UKC standards.

At each of these events/seminars we need to know what the club feels we need to change at field trials-hunts or any other event in order make things run smoother have a better time and eliminate any hard feelings at any time from anyone.
We need to have input as to what is going on in our state with our hunting regulations and our rights as dog owners.
All of these things are what will make up our Bi-montly news letter. Your Ideas and input can only make things better and give us as a club of united houndsmen a forward direction to move.

Thanks for your time and hope to see you at the next event.
